The best picnic spots in Sydney.
Sydney is spoiled for beautiful places to lay down a blanket. Whether you’re planning a proposal, a birthday or a slow weekend afternoon with friends, here are five of our favourite picnic spots around the city — with a note on when to go and what each one does best.
-
Centennial Park — best for groups & lazy afternoons.
The city’s grand old picnic ground: wide open lawns, towering Moreton Bay figs and plenty of shade to choose from. There’s easy parking off Grand Drive and room to spread out, so it suits bigger groups beautifully. Head in during the late afternoon, when the light turns gold through the trees.
-
Balmoral Beach — best for proposals & sunsets.
The grassy reserve behind the sand looks straight across Middle Harbour, and the dusk light here is hard to beat. It’s calmer than the eastern beaches, with cafés close by for a coffee run. On weekends, arrive before 5pm to claim a good patch of grass.
-
Mrs Macquarie’s Point — best for that iconic Sydney backdrop.
Opera House and Harbour Bridge in a single frame, wrapped in Botanic Garden greenery. It’s popular for good reason, so midweek or early in the day is your friend. Unbeatable for milestone moments you’ll want to remember in photos.
-
Bradleys Head — best for romance & quiet.
A leafy headland a short stroll from Taronga, with bushland behind you and the open harbour in front. It feels tucked away and unhurried — ideal for an intimate date or an anniversary. Wear comfortable shoes for the gentle walk in.
-
Parsley Bay — best for families & shelter.
A calm little cove in Vaucluse with its own pretty suspension bridge, sheltered water and shady lawns. It’s protected from the wind and soft underfoot, which makes it a relaxed, easy choice for family gatherings and little ones.
