Floral heart arch with MARRY ME letters and rose petals on a Sydney beach at golden hour

How to plan a proposal in Sydney.

Proposing is one of the few things you only do once, and most people planning one have never planned anything like it before. Here is the order we suggest doing things in, based on the proposals we have styled around Sydney.

  1. Start with the time of day, not the place.

Almost everyone picks a location first, then works out the time. Do it the other way around. The hour before sunset gives you warm light, softer crowds and photographs that look effortless. Once you know roughly what time you want, you can choose a spot that actually works at that hour — some parks face the wrong way and lose the light early.

  2. Pick somewhere with a reason behind it.

The most memorable proposals we style are rarely at the most famous location. They are at the beach you went to on your second date, or the park near your first flat. If there is no obvious sentimental spot, a quiet headland or a stretch of harbourside lawn will always beat a crowded lookout.

  3. Decide who else is there.

Photographer hiding behind a tree? Family waiting nearby to celebrate? Or completely private? There is no wrong answer, but decide early, because it changes the location and timing. If you want photos and have not booked a photographer, that is the thing to organise first — the good ones book out weeks ahead.

  4. Have a wet weather plan before you need one.

Sydney weather turns quickly. Know in advance whether you would reschedule, move somewhere covered, or bring it home. Deciding this calmly a week beforehand is far better than deciding it the morning of, with a ring in your pocket.

  5. Keep the logistics away from you.

The hardest part of a surprise proposal is being in two places at once — with your partner, and at the setup. This is the part we take off your hands. We arrive early, style everything and leave before you get there, so you simply walk up to a finished setting. No carrying, no rushing, no explaining why you have a boot full of flowers.

If you are planning a proposal in Sydney, we would love to help with the setting. Tell us your date and roughly where you are thinking, and we will take it from there — discreetly.
